Lecture Summary: Due to advances in medicine, patients are living longer. As such, surgeons are are asked to evaluate older patients for both acute and chronic surgical pathology. As such, surgeons are not operating on older patients which present unique opportunities to enhance patient care as well as patient satisfaction. This lecture will discuss the management of acute post operative pain in the geriatric surgical patient so as to maximize patient experience and minimize post-operative complications such as delirium, respiratory failure and pneumonia.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, the participant will be able to discuss the definition and physiology of pain
Upon completion, the participant will be able to discuss the changes in physiology associated with aging and their effects on pain management in the elderly
Upon completion, the participant will be able to formulate a plan of care for pain relief in the geriatric patient
Upon completion, the participant will be able to use knowledge of different pain medication mechanisms to provide adequate pain relief to at risk geriatric populations
