Lecture Summary: We will discuss the topic of frailty as it pertains to getting informed consent for surgeons. We will discuss various gravity tool that will allow the surgeon to guide their patient discussions concerning morbidity, mortality, and likely post-operative discharge destination so as to have an all encompassing informed consent. We will also discuss using frailty as a trigger for preoperative optimization from a nutritional, prehabilitation and medicine optimization stand point.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe and define frailty in a surgical patient.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to use various frailty calculators to calculate their patients frailty score and implement preoperative patient optimization to enhance patient outcomes.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to use frailty scoring to enhance communication to obtain in-depth informed consent.
