Lecture Summary: Surgical aortic valve replacement is an effective treatment for severe aortic stenosis. Recommendations for surgical valve replacement for aortic stenosis are based upon comparisons of the natural history of patients with aortic stenosis to outcomes after surgical aortic valve replacement. The timing of surgical intervention for aortic stenosis is based upon the patient’s symptom status, the severity of aortic stenosis, left ventricular ejection fraction, and whether other cardiac surgery is indicated.
Learning Objectives:
Describe recommendations for AVR in symptomatic patients
Identify recommendations for AVR in asymptomatic patients
Explain indications for AVR for patients undergoing other cardiac surgery
