“Fran” Sutter, a Philadelphia native is a graduate of LaSalle University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his first two years of residency years at Parkview Hospital in Philadelphia, followed by an additional 8 years completing both his Surgical & CT Residency at Thomas Jefferson University. He is Professor of Surgery, Thomas Jefferson Medical College, TJU. Fran is Chief of Cardiac Surgery and past President of the Medical Staff of Lankenau Medical Center. In 2006, he received the Roland Holroyd Award presented to a distinguished physician and graduate of LaSalle University, Philadelphia. In 2018, he received the O.J. Snyder Memorial Medal, recognizing leadership and service to the osteopathic profession and to the institution, the highest award offered by PCOM.
Dr Sutter maintains board certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, American Board of Surgery and American Osteopathic Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a nationally and internationally recognized cardiac surgeon and a noted lecturer.
A distinguished author, Dr Sutter has published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals and co-authored book chapters. Fran is an invited guest speaker at ACC, AATS, STS, STS Tech-Con, ISMICS, International Coronary Congress, Re-Evolution Summit @ Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, at Frontiers in Cardiovascular Diseases @ Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute, Houston, TX.
Fran loves teaching, and frequently hosts visiting surgical teams, who want to learn his surgical process and current techniques.
Dr Sutter’s interest in minimally invasive cardiac surgery procedures began as early as 1997 – 1998, long before the acquisition of the daVinci Robot in February 2005 by Lankenau Hospital. Over the past 15 years, Fran continues to perform approximately 175 robotic coronary revascularization cases yearly, with an annual CABG volume of more than 250 cases / year. To date, he has successfully performed over 2100 robotic coronary bypass procedures.
