Dr. James Zins is the Chairman, Department of Plastic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He trained in both general and Plastic Surgery at The Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania. After completing his plastic surgery residency he spent six months as an honorary registrar in maxillofacial surgery a great Ormond Street and University College Hospital London, England. He joined the Cleveland Clinic Department of Plastic Surgery as a staff surgeon after completing his time in London. He became chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery in 1992 and continues to serve in this position.
Dr. Zins served as President of The American Association of Plastic Surgeons in 2017. He currently serves as a director of The American Board of Plastic Surgery (2016-2022), is the former Vice Chair of The Residency Review Committee of the ACGME (2018-2020), is a Senior Examiner for The American Board of Plastic Surgery Oral Examination.
In 2018 Dr. Zins received The Academic Chairman and Program Director’s Robert M. Goldwyn Mentor of the Year award. He recently served as The Plastic Surgery Foundation Visiting Professor (2016)Visiting Professor for the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeon(2018) , and Academic Chair and Program Directors Visiting Professor( 2018-2019).
His research focuses on facial aesthetic surgery and craniofacial surgery and biology. He is particularly noted for his clinical work in land writing on facelift techniques. His paper Membranous Vs Endochondral Bone: Implications for Craniofacial Reconstruction is one of the 100 most frequently cited papers in plastic surgery. Dr Zins has published over 200 papers in peer reviews journals, numerous book chapters, and edited three books. Recent publications include the 2020 Plastic Surgery Clinics Volume on Facelift and Abdominoplasty.
