Dr. Sharon Beth Larson is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery and Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa and is the surgical director of the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation program. She graduated from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Vallejo, California and completed her general surgery residency at New York University Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Larson completed her fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota and completed an advanced fellowship in thoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Larson is the first female recipient of the Lillehei Surgical Society Richard C. Lillehei and Earl Bakken Prize awarded to her at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Annual Meeting in San Diego, California in 2015 and has won other awards including the Random Acts of Kindness Award in medical school and the Sampath Kumar Award for Excellence in Surgery in her residency. She is the first female cardiothoracic surgeon to practice in the state of Iowa and her professional interests include heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and adult cardiac surgery.
