Dr. Julie Caffrey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She specializes in both acute and reconstructive burn surgery. Dr. Caffrey received her DO from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where she was elected to the Sigma Sigma Phi Honor Society. She completed her general surgery residency at Flushing Hospital in New York and a fellowship in burn surgery at Westchester Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center. Julie has been faculty at Johns Hopkins since 2014 and directs the burn surgery fellowship. The focus of Dr. Caffrey’s academic work has been on quality improvement and the clinical care of burn injured patients. In partnership with nursing and hospital leadership, Dr. Caffrey and the burn team significantly reduced MRSA bacteremia rates by implementing various practice changes including introduction of UV light technology, bed rotation, surgical scrub for all staff, and prophylactic treatment with intranasal mupirocin to prevent transmission of MRSA in the burn unit.
